    How to time it

    Cosmos is sown, not wild: its date depends on the variety, the sowing schedule and the people who run the field. Engaru in Hokkaido advertises mid-August to late September, Uminonakamichi in Fukuoka mid-October to early November. There is no national front to follow.

    How long it lastsHeat or a changed sowing plan can move a field by weeks. At Bihoku Hillside Park in 2026 one variety peaked in August and was over by early September, before its own festival, and the park cleared the plants.

    If you are earlyEngaru's field in Hokkaido is the early one, mid-August to late September. At Showa Kinen Park the yellow Lemon Bright is expected from mid-September to early October in 2026: yellow cosmos and the pink and white kinds are different plantings.

    If you are lateShowa Kinen Park expects its pink and white Sensation cosmos from early to late October in 2026, and Uminonakamichi gives mid-October to early November as its usual season.

      Two windows back to back in a former air base in Tachikawa. Four million yellow cosmos cover the Flower Hill from mid-September, followed by 200,000 Sensation cosmos in October. Then the ginkgo avenues turn: 106 trees along the Canal in early to mid-November, 98 more on the 300 m Katarai avenue in mid to late November.

      The park covers about 170 hectares and the Flower Hill is at the far end from the Tachikawa gate: enter from Nishi-Tachikawa or hire a bicycle inside.

      About eight million cosmos of 20 varieties on 4.2 hectares outside Kameoka, 20 minutes from Kyoto by train. It pairs with the Sagano scenic railway, which ends in Kameoka, and with the Hozu river boats, which start there.

      A flower park at the northern end of a small island in Hakata Bay, ten minutes by ferry from the city. In autumn a whole slope of cosmos runs down towards the sea: about 200,000 early plants flower from early to late October, and about 300,000 later ones take over from late October into early November, so the hill stays in flower for about five weeks.
