Four seasons: what each is good for, what is hard about it, and how it goes month by month.

    Now · Sep – Nov · 2026

    Autumn

The harvest moon, the great festivals of October, then foliage moving south from the mountains through November. The most tightly dated season of the year.

    Pros

    • Mild days, and from late October the clearest, driest weeks of the year

    Cons

    • Typhoons come most often in August and September and are still possible in October; the heat lingers to the middle of September
    • Foliage crowds in Kyoto in late November; hotels and light-ups sell out weeks ahead
    • Popular foliage and festival spots fill early at weekends

    September 長月 · now

Heat lingers to the middle of the month, then the first cool nights; typhoons are at their most frequent, so keep plans loose. Silver Week, a run of holidays around the third Monday, brings domestic crowds for a few days. One of the quietest months of the year for foreign visitors.

    Winter

Snow country, hot springs, crab and the clearest skies of the year on the Pacific side. Plum opens from Kyushu to Tokyo before the cold has left the north.

    Pros

    • The clearest skies of the year on the Pacific side, and Fuji often in view from Tokyo
    • Snow country, hot springs, crab and illuminations
    • The quietest weeks of the year once the New Year holiday ends

    Cons

    • Cold and short days; the Alpine routes are closed and some gardens with them
    • Around the New Year museums, gardens and shops close for a few days each, on their own dates between 26 December and 4 January
    • Snow disrupts trains on the Japan Sea side

    December 師走

Cold and clear on the Pacific side, among the driest months in Tokyo; snow settles in Hokkaido, the Alps and along the Japan Sea coast, and Okinawa stays around 20°. Quiet until the last week, when Japan travels for the New Year and museums, gardens and shops close for a few days each, on their own dates between the 26th and 4 January. The busiest month of 2024 for foreign visitors, the fifth of 2025.

    Spring

Plum, then cherry, then wisteria: the blossom front walks north from March to May. Mild days, cold nights early on, and the whole country outdoors.

    Pros

    • Mild days; after Golden Week warm weather, long light and fresh green on every hillside, before the rains
    • Late blossom in the Alps and Tohoku, with fewer people

    Cons

    • The most crowded and most expensive weeks of the year around peak blossom
    • Blossom forecasts only firm up in mid-March, so dates are hard to fix far ahead
    • Golden Week, 29 April to 5 May: full trains and hotels
    • March swings from warm to cold within a day, and cedar pollen peaks

    March 弥生

Winter lets go, and the weather swings from warm to cold within a day, with more rain than in the winter months; Sapporo still has snow underfoot. Quiet in the first half, then crowds and prices climb from the middle of the month and stay high into April.

    Summer

Rain through June, then heat, fireworks and festival drums. Hydrangea in the rain, fireflies on warm nights, lavender and sunflowers on the plains of Hokkaido, where it stays cooler.

    Pros

    • Fireworks and the biggest festivals: Gion in July, Nebuta and Awa Odori in August
    • June is quieter than the blossom months; Hokkaido and the mountains stay cool all summer

    Cons

    • The rainy season: Kyushu from the end of May, the rest of Honshu from the first week of June, lifting around 19 July from Kyushu to Kanto and in late July in Tohoku; Hokkaido has none
    • July and August are hot and humid: outdoor things only before 10:00 and after 17:00
    • Obon, around 13 to 16 August, is the busiest travel time of the year
    • Typhoons come most often in August and September

    June 水無月

The rainy season settles over Honshu in the first week, over Kyushu from the end of May, and lifts from Okinawa around the 21st; Hokkaido has no rainy season at all.
